January 3, 2012: Ayers Rock, Australia to Port Douglas, Australia

G’day mates!

Another early morning for us as we wanted to watch the big rock in the desert (Uluru) turn from brown to orange-ish to maroon to red through sunrise…it was absolutely incredible! It seemed like with every elapsing minute the color on both Uluru and the Kata Tjuta changed. Following sunrise, we headed off to hike the base of Uluru, looking at the spiritual sites of the aboriginal (indigenous) people of the area. Then, unfortunately, it was time to leave Ayers Rock and head to Port Douglas. We caught a 3 hour flight to Sydney aboard VH-VPT, a Virgin Australia Embraer 190. After arriving in Sydney, we had a few hour layover where we had to reclaim our luggage and check-in again. After finishing this, we had an hour and a half or so to kill in the Sydney airport (seemingly our favorite place on this trip…) and we ate dinner before flying aboard VH-VPI (another Virgin Australia Embraer 190) up to Cairns. Arriving in Cairns we got our rental car and drove to Port Douglas, checked in and got ready for another awesome day tomorrow…SCUBA DIVING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF!
