December 29, 2011: Queenstown, NZ

Kia Ora!

What a stunning day! Today we took a scenic day trip to Milford Sound. Milford Sound is located in Fjordlands National Park which is about five hours each way away from Queenstown (where we are staying). This drive is absolutely fantastic, full of scenery that is unique (much like the rest of New Zealand). From the early stages driving along a seemingly endless lake dwarfed by mountains to the valleys and finally through the national park itself...it truly was amazing. Once at Milford Sound, we took a couple hour cruise in the sound itself, one of 14 fjords on the South Island. It was somewhat of a rainy day, but we still were able to see the sound flanked by shear cliffs and the wildlife around (mainly ducks and seals). On our drive back we went a little nuts on taking pictures, stopping at most of the stops along the way (maybe a couple to allow me to frolick in fields of flowers...:-P) before grabbing some dinner at a Tuscan restaraunt in Te Anau (the first/last city before Milford Sound, some 120 km away!). After having some yummy pizza (cranberries on pizza...really, who does that...it was delicious!!!) we headed back to Queenstown where we walked along the shore of the city's lake before doing some "chores." Tomorrow it is off to Auckland again for some beach fun and to say goodbye to New Zealand before heading to Australia!
